Capitalism or environment?
Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote last month.
The question asked was: "Is maximising total shareholder returns still the most important corporate objective?"
74% of responses answered "No" & 26% of responses answered "Yes".
Whilst we acknowledge that survey sample size is mostly limited to stonefort followers, if this poll is representative of the entire global population, ie: a vast majority of people placing greater value on non-financial objectives rather than capital gain - then we are in for even bigger changes than we probably anticipate. In such a scenario, we could expect a fundamental shift in the capitalist system that underpins how most of the world operates today. This would not necessarily be bad news. Many experts and organisations agree that such change is a pre-requisite to ensure a future habitable planet.
Of course, there are many ifs and buts. However, stonefort would expect actual actions to differ considerably from 'survey-sentiment' when it comes down to the crunch. We believe that more people, without influence, would ultimately choose to prioritise their own lifestyles over that of future generations. Perhaps harsh; but understandable. We therefore support physical strategies that prepare for a more hostile planet alongside those that seek to limit, arrest or reverse the damage that continues to be made. Basis the lack of tangible progress since December 2015 (The Paris Agreement), and the growing likelihood that essential targets will be missed, there is valid argument to prioritise such strategies. We are trying to do our bit in maritime, working with several companies that are seeking to make a positive difference to the future with new technology and meaningful innovation.
As always, all comments, different ideas & opinions are welcome.
Look after yourselves.
