Decarbonisation - Back to the future

Sooner rather than later, it certainly feels like a principle of ‘pay for your footprint’ will be mandated for the shipping industry. For the sake of the environment and humankind, this is a welcome step on the journey to Net Zero.

These additional costs will be passed on to the consumer, but it takes two to tango. Investors and asset managers are becoming more conscious about the environment, and increasingly putting their money where their mouths are. Where consumers don’t have to be a price-taker, they will vote with their feet and choose cleaner alternatives. Where there is little other choice, pressure will be applied in other ways to drive change.  All this will have implications for global trade and therefore the shipping industry.

We are seeing opportunities to combine new Net Zero technologies and initiatives with some traditional methods. It’s not just on the international shipping side, after all, the final destination of products doesn’t stop at the terminal. With this in mind, Stonefort Marine is excited to have been asked to start exploring what a future port system might look like. A project with a blank sheet of paper, all stakeholders included.  The output must be a system that works for the planet and business.
