The reality of switching-off fossil fuel production overnight would quickly lead to most of the world either starving or freezing to death. It’s not an option now. Until such time that viable alternatives may become available at scale; offsetting carbon will be an essential activity if targets aimed to avoid ‘Armageddon’ for future generations are to be met.

Investor preferences are changing in one direction. Carbon intensive industries, including shipping, need to change if they are to survive. A growing mass are rightly sceptical about the credibility of many offsets – many, but not all, are seen as greenwashing.
