We recently polled about which area of ‘shipping industry risk’ is provoking the most sleepless nights.

Although all things ‘carbon’ and ‘compliance’ are keeping many awake, it was ‘competency & experience’ that received the vast majority of the vote (>50%) .

We are not hugely surprised as we know from the organisations we work with that sustainable talent pipelines are of real concern.

Sadly, and in some ways similar to carbon, skills shortage (ashore and afloat) is a risk some hold as one that won’t impact them directly. In shipping, retirement dates of many C-suites responsible for managing the risk will arrive simultaneously with career end dates of their coalface colleagues …so, it can be convenient to focus elsewhere.

We believe that effective risk management is impossible in the absence of organisational capability. Conclusion? - there are fewer more important activities than prioritising skills development for the long-term. Failure to do so could easily lead to avoidable accidents in the future.

Strategic planning to manage this risk is one Stonefort Marine are highly experienced in. It is one of our core services.
